16/10/12 Restraining the Tongue Intro
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever can guarantee to me what is between his two lips and what is between his two legs, I can guarantee for him Paradise.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (6474)]
“O Messenger of Allah, tell me of a deed which will take me into Paradise and will keep me away from the Hell-fire.” [After describing all of the basics of Islam such as the five pillars, jihad, etc., the Prophet (sas) continued:] … Should I not inform you of that which enables and strengthens all of that? I said, “Why yes, O Prophet of Allah!” He (sas) then took hold of his tongueand said, Restrain this. I said, “Are we then held accountable for what we [merely] talk about? He (sas) said, May your mother be bereaved O Muadh! And, are the people thrown on their faces into the fire for any reason other than the fruits of their tongues?
In this hadith, we see the emphasis is on the negative side of the tongue, whereas in the previous hadiths, the emphasis is on the positive side of the tongue.
Most people have the tendency to be lenient about this issue. We will be held accountable for what we say. We will be rewarded for saying good things and we may be punished for saying bad things.
Being cynical to others and saying things just for fun is something that a person is going to be accountable for. Even if a Muslim says things in the form of a cynical du’a (e.g. “May Allah guide him”) he will be held against this action
The story of a man (from an Israel tribe) that the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, narrated:
“There were two relatives or brothers. One of them was pious and righteous and the other one used to commit sins. The pious person always tried to remind the sinful one, but he did not do so in the appropriate way of making da’wa. One day while he was passing by the sinner he said: ‘I swear by Allah that He will not forgive you!’ Upon this Allah said: ‘Who is putting himself higher than My Authority?!” So Allah forgave the sinner and held the pious one accountable for what he said even though he was righteous.”
Dont be proud or think you are better then anyone else, Pride may be the sin which leads to Allah taking the gift of your belief away, no one knows the state in which they will die
..By the One, other than Whom there is no deity, verily one of you performs the actions of the people of Paradise until there is but an arms length between him and it, and that which has been written overtakes him, and so he acts with the actions of the people of the Hellfire and thus enters it; and verily one of you performs the actions of the people of the Hellfire, until there is but an arms length between him and it, and that which has been written overtakes him and so he acts with the actions of the people of Paradise and thus he enters it.”
[It was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.]
Allah’s Apostle said, “A prostitute was forgiven by Allah, because, passing by a panting dog near a well and seeing that the dog was about to die of thirst, she took off her shoe, and tying it with her head-cover she drew out some water for it. So, Allah forgave her because of that.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 4/538)
