It is Not the cloth that oppresses, it is the illiterate mind

It is Not the cloth that oppresses, it is the illiterate mind

A piece of cloth.

How can it oppress?

How can it change a strong confident woman, in to a woman who is subjugated and subdued,

A woman with no identity, who is not seen and considered?

Of course it can’t.

What oppresses women is the minds who cannot understand that women are capable of making their own choices, that women are capable of making choices that are different to the ones that you would choose for yourself.

The mind that is unprepared to see out of it’s self imposed blinkers and understand other perspectives.

It is oppressive when people say women are so silly they cannot think for themselves, they are easily brainwashed, they are incapable of making decisions, someone is influencing them.

It is oppressive when people say women cannot choose for themselves, so we will choose for them.

I choose hijab.

Like if you do too!

  1. I came here from Andreas Moser’s site. Your writing is VERY good! I have found the recent discussions and legal wranglings over Muslim women’s headdresses rather demeaning. There seems to be a growing “culture of protection” (boosted, I fear, by the US cultural of “it’s not my fault”) believing that no one can take care of themselves. While I agree with protecting a person’s rights, one of those rights must be the personal right to choose, and not to be dictated to.
Although I think I will have to yell at Andreas a bit, for getting me interested in yet ANOTHER blog to follow – 34 now, plus trying to get my own running. Ah, the price I pay for not being the typical ignorant American, no? 🙂
